CELL is proud of Larissa Parker (McGill Law, 2021) for being honoured by the Canadian Bar Association for an essay inspired by experience as a member of three CELL student cohorts (Summer 2020 to Spring 2021). Her essay considers youth climate litigation and justiciability, drawing on her first-hand exposure to La Rose v. HMTQ as a CELL student. Entitled “Let Our Living Tree Grow: Beyond Non-Justiciability for Public Interest Environmental Claims”, her essay critiques how the doctrine of justiciability can impede the development of our understanding of Charter rights in the context of the climate emergency. The essay won two CBA awards: the Paul Smith Memorial Award in Administrative Law, and the Public Interest Essay award.
